Senior Risk Officer (Head of security)

A large financial Service Company based in Johannesburg seeks a Senior Risk Officer with:

 Minimum Requirements

  • Matric
  • Degree plus Professional education, e.g. legal / audit / accounting / risk / compliance or related area.
  • Up to 8 years relevant experience.
  • Risk management experience and track record is advantageous.
  • Financial services experience and track record is advantageous.
  • Solid management / leadership track record is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially presentation skills.
  • Solid integration and analysis skills.

Role Purpose:

This role is responsible for facilitating, co-ordinating and overseeing the implementation of the GROUP enterprise risk management disciplines within their functional area of responsibility (Security).  It escalates, monitors and reports material risks to the GROUP Risk and Actuarial Director, Chief Risk Officer or designate. The primary objectives are that of contributing to the overall success and achievement of the business strategy and objectives.

Responsibilities:

Relationships:

  • Understands the needs and concerns of the Senior Executive layer across SA and Africa, and ensures these are mitigated through directing outcomes the operational layers in-region.

Reporting:

  • Facilitates the execution, monitors and reports on the progress, of any requests and instructions issued by the GROUP Risk and Actuarial Director, the GROUP Chief Risk Officer and\or the Chief Operations Officer or their designates, and initiates appropriate corrective action as may be required.

 Risk Management:

  • Ensures Policy, Standards, Processes, Governance and Operational excellence in delivery for all the elements of a complete and world class security strategy for Company.
  • Acts as change agent within the business for the communication and implementation of risk management requirements and standards, and actively promotes embedding of a risk culture by 1st line of defense in relation to decision making.
  • Facilitates and co-ordinates the integration of the business-related risk requirements into the broader governance structures, by initiating relevant discussions and meetings, and ensuring the evidencing of key risk-related decisions.
  • Promotes and co-ordinates the processes by which the 1st line of defense identifies, measures, monitors, manages and reports on material risks within their functional area of responsibility, while developing a cross-organisational view of the potential impacts.
  • Provides objective oversight, monitors and reports on the effectiveness of the operational processes adopted and implemented by the 1st line of defense, in relation to the GROUP Risk Governance Framework, including the Group Operating manual and Risk Policies.
  • Provides objective oversight, monitors and reports on the maintenance of prescribed minimum standards (for security) in the GROUP risk management methodologies, processes and data requirements, and initiates appropriate corrective action as may be required.
  • Requires a reasonable level of understanding of the quantitatively modelled or calculated risks, and how this interacts with business and operational risk over a period of 1-2 years.
  • Provides training, coaching, mentoring and support to the 1st line of defense operational controls owners so they are enabled to fulfil their risk management responsibilities.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Provides risk management advice and inputs to their executive team and attends key strategic and operational meetings of that executive team, thereby ensuring that they have appropriate knowledge and insight into the key risks of the business.

Team Effectiveness:

  • Balances own priorities with directing and motivating others.
  • Creates a climate for optimal performance.
  • Guides and directs staff to achieve operational excellence standards.
  • Individually accountable for staff time, tasks and output quality over periods of 1-2 years.
  • Manages performance.
  • Plans and assigns work over periods of 1-2 years.
  • Selects potential staff to sustain customer/client service delivery.
