Job Purpose
Provide specialist technical expertise and support across the organisation’s Windows Server environment. This includes the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimisation of physical servers, virtual on-premises servers, and cloud-hosted Windows Server platforms. Ensure the overall stability, security, and performance of server infrastructure, enabling the organisation’s systems to operate efficiently and reliably.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular Windows Server health checks.
- Conduct in-depth troubleshooting, fault finding, OS upgrades, and server migrations.
- Configure and troubleshoot Microsoft clustered environments.
- Investigate issues related to Active Directory (AD) and DNS.
- Configure SQL Server where required.
- Ensure all technical documentation is accurate, current, and accessible.
- Perform monitoring and logging using tools such as Dynatrace and Grafana.
- Optimise server performance and proactively identify enhancement opportunities.
- Validate and approve acceptance criteria before onboarding new servers into the environment.
- Conduct scripting and automation tasks to streamline operational processes.
- Use tools such as SCCM for packaging, patching, and scripting.
- Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Chef and Terraform.
- Enhance containerisation and orchestration capabilities across the environment.
- Participate in project planning, implementation, and end-to-end delivery.
- Continuously review existing processes to identify improvement or automation opportunities.
- Follow SDLC best practices and support governance standards.
- Engage with virtualisation teams (e.g., VMware) to support server lifecycle management.
- Ensure disaster recovery (DR) readiness and contingency planning.
- Conduct root cause and trend analysis to deliver sustainable solutions.
- Perform vulnerability management and remediation activities.
Technical Skills & Expertise
- Extensive knowledge of Windows Server OS
- SQL Server configuration experience
- Cloud platform knowledge: Azure and/or AWS
- Strong scripting and automation capability (e.g., PowerShell, Python)
Qualifications
- Advanced Diploma / National First Degree (NQF Level 6 or above) in IT or related field.
Experience
- 10+ years’ experience in IT environments.
- Minimum 5+ years as a Windows Server / Systems Engineer.
- Windows Server experience and certification required.
- Azure and/or AWS cloud experience and certification
